March 4 is a national day of action to defend public education and also the day the UT Board of Regents meets in Austin. The UT community will join together to say: stop the attack on students, instructors and staff!
As we petition for fair treatment of UT employees, teaching and non-teaching, we should also demand domestic partner benefits for UT employees regardless of marital status. It's a matter of equality.
Come to the rally on March 4 and look for the JTI table. We’re bringing signs saying "Domestic Partner Benefits at UT now!" (You can BYO signs too.)

Saturday 2/27--March Against Hate Crimes in Austin
See note below from the Shady Ladies softball team. JTI-Austin encourages all to go the march on Saturday and join with other to show our outrage and resolve in the face of hate.

Hi Everyone,
Late last Friday night on February 19, two of our players were on their way home from OCH after attending Softball Austin's Jersey Night which kicks off each new softball season. All of our players, including Matt Morgan and Emmanuel Winston, were wearing their Shady Ladies jersey as part of the festivities.
As Matt & Emmanuel began their walk from OCH to their car at City Hall, they didn't notice the four men following them. When they got close to City Hall, the men ambushed Matt & Emmanuel uttering slurs about their sexuality and violently beat them before running away. Their only motivation in the attack was hate.
Our community needs to come together and take a stand against Hate and let our Austin Police and City Leaders know that they need to do more to ensure the safety and protection of all Austinites who make that same walk every night.
This Saturday afternoon, we are holding an "Austin March Against Hate" and we want to get the entire community to come join us as we all walk together with Matt Morgan and Emmanuel Winston as we take that same walk from OCH to City Hall. We will gather at OCH starting at 2PM on Saturday, February 27, 2010 and we will march from OCH to City Hall at 3PM!
We will all be wearing our Shady Ladies shirts. If you participate in any of Austin's many GLBT sports leagues, please wear your team's jersey as well.
Many of you have also asked about wanting to buy a Shady Ladies shirt to wear and we will have those available for purchase on Saturday for just $10.
So let's get the entire community unified this Saturday afternoon and take a stand against hate!

Vigil Tuesday, November 24 for victims of hate crimes
Gather at 6 p.m. at 11th and Congress
Join the Impact-Austin is hosting a vigil in the memory of Jorge Steven López Mercado, who was killed on November 14 in Puerto Rico in a horrific hate crime. The vigil will take place Tuesday, November 24, at 6 p.m., at the south gate of the Texas Capitol (at 11th and Congress). Participants are urged to bring candles.
Mercado was found dead by the side of a deserted road near Caguas, where he lived. His body had been partially burned, decapitated and dismembered.
We are also standing up for other victims of hate crimes. Jason Mattison Jr., 15, an openly gay sophomore at the Vivian T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy in Baltimore. He was found dead last week at his aunt’s house.
In Houston on November 12, a gay Langham Creek High School freshman, Jayron Martin, was beaten by a fellow student with a metal pipe while eight others stood and watched, despite his pleas for help. The attackers told Martin that after the beating he wouldn't be gay anymore. Martin suffered a concussion. He also has cuts and bruises on his arms and hands, and said he does not want to return to school.
In addition to paying tribute to these young men, we must demand accountability from our political leaders, from the school board that refused to take action in Martin's case even though they knew ahead of time about threats against the boy, to the President of the United States. Politicians on both sides of the aisle--the openly bigoted and the indifferent and silent--are responsible for creating a climate of fear and scapegoating. We stand against bigotry and silence and demand recognition and justice for these young men.

After a hard fought battle by supporters of equal marriage, Question 1 was approved by voters in Maine yesterday, stripping same-sex partners of the right to equal marriage. We are not backing down or giving up, but are more resolved to fight for LGBT equality in all fifty states.

ALL EYES ON MAINE...
Today, voters will in Maine decide the fate of marriage their state. Question 1 in Maine seeks to strip LGBT people of rights and protections currently afforded to them through state laws. The mobilization and spirit for the National Equality March inspired many new activists to get involved in the campaign in Maine, and of this morning, it's to close to predict the outcome.
